Stripe is seeking a Commercial Counsel to support its Americas Sales team, focusing on negotiating complex agreements, advising on commercial and legal issues, and bringing new products to market. The role involves building commercial legal infrastructure, drafting agreements, improving internal processes, and leveraging AI tooling. The counsel will partner with various global teams, develop training for the Sales team, and act as an escalation point for outside counsel. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of relevant experience, a JD, strong problem-solving and communication skills, and familiarity with legal issues in hosted data and technology services. Preferred qualifications include fintech experience, advising high-growth companies, and knowledge of AI/LLM tools for legal processes and data protection laws.

What you'd actually do

  1. Support the AMER Sales team, leading negotiations for complex and strategic agreements;
  2. Advise on a wide range of commercial and legal issues, including launch of new products to Stripe users and support international expansions;
  3. Work closely with Product Legal to bring new products and features to market;
  4. Be an integral part of the build out of Stripe’s commercial legal infrastructure so that we can scale and operate efficiently at pace with Stripe’s exponential growth - this work includes drafting and maintaining Stripe’s agreements and playbooks, leading and contributing projects to improve internal processes, leveraging AI tooling to optimize how we work and collaborate with our clients, partners and users;
  5. Partner with teams across Stripe globally, including sales, operations, product, tax, risk groups, and others;

Skills

Required

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in-house or in a technology practice group in a top law firm
  • JD degree or foreign equivalent
  • Intellectually curious and a creative problem solver
  • A self starter with a bias for action
  • A clear and concise communicator (in written and verbal forms)

  • Familiar with the range of legal issues and commercial risks that arise in connection with hosted data and technology services

Nice to have

  • Experience working in payment or fintech industries and knowledge of associated regulatory issues
  • In-house experience advising high growth companies
  • Working knowledge on how to use LLM tools
  • Experience in improving legal processes with AI technology
  • A working knowledge of data protection laws such as CCPA, GDPR, and HIPAA
