Commercial Legal Counsel for an AI company in Singapore, responsible for structuring, drafting, and negotiating commercial contracts, supporting sales and cross-functional teams, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance in APAC, and providing general legal support. Requires 10+ years of legal experience, with a focus on complex technology and public sector deals, and a solid understanding of AI legal and practical aspects.

What you'd actually do

  1. Structure, draft, negotiate and provide strategic advice on a wide range of commercial contracts, including master services agreements, data protection agreements, complex partnership agreements, reseller agreements, professional services agreements. The scope will involve supporting tenders and RFPs.
  2. Actively involved in and effectively collaborate with sales representatives, deployment strategists, applied AI engineers, data scientists, infosec, government affairs, marketing, communications and finance to support commercial success and ensure legal and regulatory compliance in APAC.
  3. Ownership and accountability to the team to deliver meaningful results, define priorities and manage clients amidst changing deadlines and demands.
  4. Stay updated on and ensure compliance with the latest AI-related legal and regulatory developments in APAC, and provide awareness and guidance to the organization on potential risks and opportunities.
  5. Proactively identify areas for improvement and deliver customised training and support to the regional team on legal and compliance matters related to AI and our business. Enable and equip one another with on-the-job coaching, sharing best practices and feedback to better support and grow the business as a team.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor degree or above (LLB, LLM, Juris Doctor preferred) from an accredited law school and admission to practice law at least in Singapore.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience, including negotiating complex technology transactions preferably in an AI-focused environment or related technology field and at least 5 years in-house experience at technology companies covering Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Hands-on experience negotiating public sector contracts is required.
  • A solid legal understanding and practical use of artificial intelligence technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing and their applications is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of other relevant areas of law, such as data privacy, intellectual property and fair use, contract law and liability, regulatory, compliance and ethical considerations.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal and technical issues related to AI and to identify potential legal risks and solutions is critical.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation presence and builds confidence with customers.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in another language relevant to Asia would be an advantage.
