Senior Test Technician - Charging Systems

Joby Aviation is seeking a Senior Test Technician for their Charging Systems team. The role involves supporting testing of external charging systems for aircraft, including environmental, mechanical, and electrical tests. Responsibilities include setting up and executing tests, building custom test jigs, assisting with assembly of components, installing instrumentation, and building wiring harnesses. The ideal candidate will have experience with high-power, high-voltage charging systems, hydronic systems, and battery safety. Experience with testing and certification standards, CAN/Ethernet protocols, and Linux command-line tools are desired.

What you'd actually do

  1. Support the testing on the external charging system for the aircraft, including but not limited to environmental, mechanical, and electrical tests.
  2. Setup, execute, and monitor validation, certification, and reliability tests at component and system level as per approved test plan.
  3. Build and maintain custom test jigs for testing charging ports, battery cooling system, and battery charging systems.
  4. Work closely with Test Engineers and Equipment Design Engineers to provide support in assembling, maintaining, and operating in-house designed test rigs, stands and fixtures.
  5. Support Test Engineers with assembling e-boxes, contactors, and fuse assemblies with minimal supervision.

Skills

Required

  • Experiences with external charging systems that provide high power, high voltage, and high current.
  • Experience with hydronic systems, building coolant loops, and performing leak tests.
  • Experience with handling and operating near high power density cells, modules, and packs.
  • Knowledge of basic safety steps working around battery (risk prevention and mitigation).
  • Experience with reading mechanical design and manufacturing drawing.
  • Experience with component assembly and systems integration of electronics.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving & continuous improvement skills, analytical, multi-tasking.
  • Hands-on attitude and detail-oriented work habits in testing environment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of instrumentation and analytical tools, hand and power tools and HV equipment.
  • H.S Diploma or GED or 5+ years equivalent industry work experience.

Nice to have

  • Experience with UL, IEC, SAE testing and certification.
  • Experience with CAN and Ethernet communication protocols for charger control and diagnostics.
  • Experience with high-power DC charging systems and power electronics (rectifiers, converters).
  • Experiences with thermocouples, current and voltage sensing.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux command-line tools (file operations, process management, networking utilities) and simple Bash scripts to automate test setup, log collection, and diagnostics.
