This role involves operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) robots for composite layup operations in aircraft manufacturing. The Senior AFP Layup Technician will also train and mentor other technicians, perform routine maintenance, and collaborate with engineers to improve processes. Experience with AFP machines or 5 Axis CNC Router Machines is required, along with the ability to work in fast-paced, regulated environments.

What you'd actually do

  1. Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) robot.
  2. Assist in setting up and calibrating the AFP system for optimal performance, ensuring it aligns with the required parameters.
  3. Gain hands-on experience in loading and unloading composite materials onto the AFP machine, ensuring proper alignment and placement for the lamination process.
  4. Observe and assist in monitoring the AFP process during lamination, making necessary adjustments under supervision.
  5. Participate in routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, inspecting, and replacing consumable components, while working alongside experienced technicians.

Skills

Required

  • HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • 4+ years of working with automated fiber placement machines or 5 Axis CNC Router Machines
  • Ability to handle complex assignments and work independently
  • 4+ years of troubleshooting AFP Machines
  • Experience working in fast-paced, time sensitive environments
  • Demonstrated abilities following standardized work instructions
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping purposes
  • Experienced level in using computer software programs (i.e.- Google, Microsoft suite)
  • Continuous standing, squatting, bending, pulling, twisting, and lifting throughout the workday.
  • Lifting of 50 lbs. or less
  • Must wear PPE when required
  • Have no known allergies to epoxies or other composites materials and able to become certified to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Ability to become forklift, crane, or equipment certified

Nice to have

  • Associate degree from a college or Trade School Certificate
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) experience
  • Fabrication and Welding experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in a high-volume production environment that relies on a well-defined process to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or 5S environments.
