3d Printing Lab Technician, Robotics

OpenAI OpenAI · AI Frontier · San Francisco, CA · Research

The role is for a 3D Printing Lab Technician on the OpenAI Robotics team. The technician will manage and operate the additive manufacturing lab, supporting rapid hardware iteration for robotics development. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining 3D printers, developing workflows for print submission and tracking, preparing and post-processing prints, inspecting parts, managing inventory, and assisting with mechanical builds and general prototype technician work. The role requires hands-on experience with additive manufacturing and strong organizational skills, with preferred qualifications including extensive experience with various 3D printing technologies and materials, and familiarity with hardware engineering support and electromechanical assembly.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead operation, maintenance, and calibration of a fleet of 3D printers supporting robotics prototyping efforts
  2. Develop and maintain workflows for print submission, prioritization, tracking, and delivery across engineering teams
  3. Prepare, process, and optimize print jobs across a variety of additive manufacturing technologies and materials
  4. Perform post-processing operations including support removal, finishing, bonding, machining, dyeing, and assembly preparation
  5. Inspect completed parts for dimensional accuracy, cosmetic quality, and print integrity before delivery to engineers
