Who owns the compute hires upstream — everyone else rents
With the full universe back in view, the cleanest structural split in AI hiring isn't size — it's compute. Meta posted 17 upstream roles and one agent role; Salesforce posted 31 agent roles and almost nothing upstream. AMD and NVIDIA confirm it from the silicon side. If you own the chips or train the models, you hire researchers and serving engineers. If you build on top, you hire agent builders.

58% of every new AI role opened last week is at the Agent station. Foundation-model layers together made up 8%. The hiring market is no longer building models — it is building things on top of models.

The AI-lab-vs-banking-license inversion
Capital One has 70% more active AI roles than Anthropic. After its Q1 2026 acquisition of Brex, Capital One's AI hiring book is 2× Anthropic's. The hiring data inverts the reputation.
