Associate Music Counsel

This role is for a Corporate Counsel specializing in music licensing, policy development, content creation and distribution, and related transactions for Google products like YouTube and YouTube Music in APAC. The counsel will draft and review license agreements, advise on IP matters, respond to cross-functional legal requests, and support the improvement of legal processes and regulatory compliance.

What you'd actually do

  1. Discuss, draft, and review multi-territorial digital distribution license agreements with major content owners, record labels, music publishers, and international collecting societies, tailored for YouTube’s global reach.
  2. Provide counsel and legal analysis on Intellectual Property matters, including intricate agreement structures and positioning, for internal business development, sales, finance, and various cross-functional product teams.
  3. Respond to cross-functional legal requests from the licensing, marketing, and business development teams, ensuring all internal stakeholders receive timely, advice that aligns with the organizational goals.
  4. Advise stakeholders on nuanced agreement structures, approval processes, and company policies, while identifying potential risks and escalating issues to executive counsel for further specialized guidance.
  5. Support the continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes, collaborating with experienced counsel on regulatory issues and providing assistance on sophisticated legal analysis projects.

Skills

Required

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing, or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., registered in-house counsel status), in U.S. state or APAC jurisdiction

Nice to have

  • Experience with industry initiatives regarding music and copyright, leveraging understanding of legal rights associated with sound recordings and musical compositions.
  • Experience advising on legal and regulatory issues involving Generative AI and machine learning for content licensing, ensuring compliance with evolving media laws.
  • Experience in media sectors like film, television, and sports to drive successful multi-territorial digital distribution agreements.
  • Experience analyzing and responding to regulatory or policy matters related to music and copyright across APAC region.
  • Ability to communicate in a local Asian language fluently (e.g., Japanese, Korean, Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, or Mandarin) to discuss with key regional partners.
