Associate Scientist, Postdoctoral Fellow - AI in Infectious Disease Modeling

Merck Merck · Pharma · PA

This postdoctoral research fellow position focuses on leveraging AI, specifically LLMs and generative AI, to automate the extraction, evaluation, and proposal of health economic infectious disease models. The role involves building a corpus of models, extracting detailed information using LLMs, implementing an AI reasoning layer for validation, and using generative AI to suggest new model structures. The ultimate goal is to enhance model transparency, accelerate deployment, and improve consistency in global health decision-making for infectious disease preparedness and response.

What you'd actually do

  1. Build a robust corpus of health economic infectious disease models using AI-assisted systematic review techniques,
  2. Utilize advanced LLMs to precisely extract infectious disease model type, structure (states, transitions), and parameters (costs, utilities, probabilities),
  3. Implement an intelligent AI reasoning layer to evaluate consistency, completeness, and scientific validity across extracted models,
  4. Employ generative AI to propose new model structures, dynamically guided by disease-specific needs and prior evidence,
  5. Apply the developed pipeline to critical case studies (e.g., RSV vaccine modeling) and rigorously compare AI-generated models with existing approaches,
