Audio/visual Application Engineer

Uber Uber · Consumer · San Francisco, CA · Engineering

Uber is seeking an Audio/Visual Application Engineer to design, implement, and support A/V systems globally. This role involves advanced scripting, architectural design, troubleshooting, and building observability into A/V environments. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior staff, and ensure high-reliability system performance. Responsibilities include scripting, monitoring, on-call support, technical design, and documentation.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and implement scalable and high-performing A/V solutions in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  2. Write, test, and maintain configuration scripts and automation to deploy and manage A/V systems across Uber offices.
  3. Proactively monitor and improve A/V system reliability by building observability (alerts, telemetry, health dashboards) into production systems.
  4. Participate in on-call rotations and respond to escalations, leveraging strong troubleshooting practices to minimize downtime.
  5. Lead technical design discussions, develop architecture artifacts (e.g., system diagrams, ERDs), and define configuration standards.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, A/V Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience engineering A/V systems in enterprise environments (conference rooms, boardrooms, auditoriums).
  • Proficiency in configuration/scripting (e.g., Crestron, Q-SYS, Extron, Zoom APIs, JSON, Python, JS, or equivalent tools).
  • Deep understanding of A/V control systems, video conferencing technologies, signal flow, audio processing, and A/V-over-IP.
  • Experience building and maintaining A/V monitoring and telemetry platforms (e.g., Zoom Dashboard, Logitech Sync, Crestron XiO Cloud).
  • Strong documentation skills, including runbooks, design wikis, and SOPs.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially when working with cross-functional teams and diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience leading system troubleshooting during incidents, with a focus on root cause analysis and long-term mitigation.

Nice to have

  • Certifications such as CTS, CTS-D, Crestron Programmer, Q-SYS Level 2, or equivalent.
  • Experience with A/V infrastructure in multi-site, global deployments.
  • Familiarity with ticketing and configuration management systems (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow, Git).
  • Ability to manage A/V integrators and contractors during buildouts and retrofits.
  • Experience developing testing frameworks and implementing CI/CD pipelines for A/V system configuration deployments.
  • Passion for mentoring and driving continuous improvement within engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and designing inclusive A/V experiences.
