Commissioning Master Mariner, Marauder

This role is for a Commissioning Master Mariner to conduct end-of-line testing and commissioning of an autonomous surface vessel. The responsibilities include safe navigation, supervising crew, managing operational systems, and collaborating with onshore teams for testing and commissioning initiatives. The role requires extensive maritime experience and adherence to regulations.

What you'd actually do

  1. Ensure the safe navigation and operation of the vessel at all times including when in autonomous control.
  2. Effectively manage and supervise the onboard crew to foster a high-performance team environment.
  3. Collaborate with shoreside personnel and onboard crew to ensure successful testing of autonomous systems and adherence to commissioning plans.
  4. Assist in the planning and execution of vessel missions aimed at developing and refining autonomous operating systems.
  5. Coordinate with port control, port authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, pilot associations, and any relevant stakeholders to ensure proper access, compliance, and operational approvals for all on-water activities.

Skills

Required

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard 500/1600T Master License of Self-propelled Vessels Upon Oceans
  • STCW Basic Training, GMDSS Operator, OICNW, Medical PIC, FCC License
  • Proven experience in a senior officer role aboard crewed vessels in dynamic maritime environments
  • Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety procedures, shipboard emergency procedures, and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to interpret nautical charts, weather forecasts, and navigational tools
  • Valid TWIC , USCG STCW Medical Certificate, and passport
  • Strong knowledge in ship handling, voyage planning, marine navigation, port operations, and International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS)
  • Able to maintain operational logs, maintenance records, and support inspection readiness
  • Strong knowledge of USCG, SOLAS, and Class regulations
  • Proficiency in voyage/route planning software, GIS tools, and maritime navigation systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to stand a 12-hour navigational watch
  • Passing background check and USCG/DOT drug testing required
  • Security clearance eligibility required

Nice to have

  • Unlimited Master’s license
  • Familiarity / experience with maneuvering characteristics of jet-drive propelled vessels
  • Experience with autonomous or unmanned systems is a plus
  • Prior experience working with the DoD or other government agencies is a plus
