This is an intern role for Critical Environment Operations within Microsoft's Cloud Infrastructure and Operations (MCIO) division. The intern will support the delivery of core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's cloud services, including Azure. Responsibilities include routine monitoring and inspection of critical facility equipment, using CMMS for maintenance, assisting with emergency monitoring, performing basic troubleshooting, escorting contractors, and ensuring compliance with safety and security requirements. The role requires pursuing or recently completing a degree in a related technical field, a strong safety focus, basic computer proficiency, and a demonstrated interest in mission-critical infrastructure or data center operations. Prior experience in facilities, utilities, or technical operations is preferred.

What you'd actually do

  1. Performs assigned basic tasks, including routine monitoring and visual inspection of critical facility equipment.
  2. Uses the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track equipment assets and complete maintenance work orders.
  3. Assists with emergency monitoring and response under supervision, following established emergency operating procedures (EOPs).
  4. Performs various types of maintenance and conducts basic troubleshooting, with support for complex issues as needed.
  5. Escorts third-party contractors and vendors on site in accordance with established levels of risk (LOR) procedures.

Skills

Required

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree or technical program in Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, Facilities Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field, with a demonstrated interest in mission‑critical infrastructure, data center operations, or facilities engineering
  • Safety focus and attention to detail, with the ability to follow strict procedures (including PPE), identify and report abnormal conditions, and demonstrate a growth mindset with eagerness to learn and accept feedback
  • Basic proficiency with computer systems and digital tools, and the ability to work effectively in a hands‑on, team‑based operational environment
  • Past or current Microsoft Data Center Academy Student
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements

Nice to have

  • Coursework, labs, or hands‑on exposure to electrical systems, mechanical systems, HVAC, generators, UPS, or building automation systems
  • Prior internship, co‑op, lab, or work experience in facilities, utilities, manufacturing, construction, or technical operations
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance concepts, standard operating procedures, or technical checklists
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work alongside technicians, engineers, and cross‑functional partners
  • Interest in pursuing a long‑term career in Critical Environments or Data Center Operations, including continued technical qualification and development
