Critical Environment Technician Intern

This is an intern position for a Critical Environment Technician within Microsoft's Cloud Infrastructure and Operations (MCIO). The role involves performing basic tasks related to monitoring and inspecting critical facility equipment, using a maintenance management system, assisting with emergency monitoring, performing basic troubleshooting and maintenance, escorting contractors, and preparing reports. The internship focuses on gaining experience in mission-critical infrastructure and data center operations.

What you'd actually do

  1. Performs assigned basic tasks, including routine monitoring and visual inspection of critical facility equipment.
  2. Uses the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track equipment assets and complete maintenance work orders.
  3. Assists with emergency monitoring and response under supervision, following established emergency operating procedures (EOPs).
  4. Performs various types of maintenance and conducts basic troubleshooting, with support for complex issues as needed.
  5. Escorts third-party contractors and vendors on site in accordance with established levels of risk (LOR) procedures.

Skills

Required

  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree or technical program in Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, Facilities Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest in mission‑critical infrastructure, data center operations, or facilities engineering
  • Safety focus and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow strict procedures (including PPE)
  • Identify and report abnormal conditions
  • Growth mindset with eagerness to learn and accept feedback
  • Basic proficiency with computer systems and digital tools
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands‑on, team‑based operational environment
  • Past or current Microsoft Data Center Academy Student

Nice to have

  • Coursework, labs, or hands‑on exposure to electrical systems, mechanical systems, HVAC, generators, UPS, or building automation systems
  • Prior internship, co‑op, lab, or work experience in facilities, utilities, manufacturing, construction, or technical operations
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance concepts, standard operating procedures, or technical checklists
  • Good communication and collaboration skills
  • Interest in pursuing a long‑term career in Critical Environments or Data Center Operations
