Data Center Engineer, Structured Cabling & Physical Network

This role is for a Data Center Engineer focused on structured cabling and the physical network within Uber's data centers. Responsibilities include collaborating with Network Engineering, driving innovation in structured cabling, reviewing designs, preparing design documents and specifications, cost analysis, overseeing retrofits, and managing technical operations. The role requires a B.S. in engineering and a minimum of 8 years of experience in data center design, construction, and operations, with deep domain experience in structured cabling and networking distribution.

What you'd actually do

  1. Collaborate with Network Engineering to understand future structured cable requirements and deployments
  2. Drive structured cable innovation within Uber’s data centers and across the industry
  3. Review structured cable designs for feasibility & operational uptime
  4. Prepare conceptual design documents illustrating structured cabling & physical networking systems and topology requirements
  5. Prepare structured cabling & networking system design criteria and specifications for data center retrofits

Skills

Required

  • B.S. in mechanical, electrical or architectural engineering degree
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in data center design, construction and operations
  • Travel to data center sites (25% to 50%)
  • Structured Cabling & Networking Distribution: Basics of all layers plus cabling, optics and supporting infrastructure
  • Understanding of mission critical structured cabling distribution that coincides with network topologies
  • Understanding of various components within structured cabling systems and design
  • Knowledge of industry standards, BICSI and RCDD standards
  • Cross functional knowledge of mission critical systems, strong troubleshooting and analytical skills

Nice to have

  • RCDD is preferred
  • Cooling: Theory, methods and efficiency (PUE)
  • Understanding and working knowledge of mechanical air-side and water-side systems for mission critical environments and various data center HVAC topologies
  • Air-side design and distribution
  • Wet-side design and distribution (chilled and condenser water systems)
  • CRAC and CRAH design and distribution
  • Understanding of mechanical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  • Knowledge of industry standards, ASHRAE, mechanical / building codes, and energy codes
  • Power Distribution: Three-phase, conditioning, and distribution from utility to chip
  • Understanding of mission critical power distribution, UPS, PDU and various data center electrical topologies
  • Understanding of electrical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  • Knowledge of industry standards, NEC, building codes, energy codes, and life safety fire alarm standards (e.g. NFPA)
  • Exposure to load management within mission critical facilities
  • Improve efficiency of data center technical systems (power, cooling, & structured cabling)
  • Collaborate and work with internal teams, Data Center Engineering & Operations staff, and carry out responsibilities with guidance from Senior Staff
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
