This role is for a Director of Community Finance Underwriting at Capital One, focusing on stabilized proprietary and multifund investments in affordable housing. The position involves strategic leadership, risk assessment, approvals, portfolio surveillance, process innovation, and team leadership. It requires extensive experience in underwriting and asset/portfolio management within the affordable housing or commercial real estate sector, with a strong emphasis on LIHTC equity structures and risk management. The role is primarily product-focused within the fintech domain, with no direct AI/ML development responsibilities.

What you'd actually do

  1. Provide strategic direction and oversight for the underwriting and portfolio management team.
  2. Lead internal approvals primarily for equity transactions and any related debt , ensuring structural integrity and alignment with Capital One’s risk appetite, financial return profiles, and regulatory requirements.
  3. Oversee risk assessment and lifecycle management of equity investments. Proactively manage emerging lower-tier and upper-tier portfolio risks and ongoing operational or financial performance metrics of affordable housing assets.
  4. Drive innovation and continuous process improvements, automated data management and risk oversight.
  5. Lead, mentor, and advocate for a high-performing team of underwriters and portfolio managers, fostering a culture of professional development and exceptional execution.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 10 years of experience in underwriting, asset management, portfolio management or any combination of the three in the field of affordable housing or commercial real estate

Nice to have

  • Master's degree in Finance, Real Estate, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in construction lending, LIHTC equity underwriting, equity asset management, or fund management
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience
  • Proven ability to lead teams and complex problem solving skills
