Director, Head of US Public Policy

This role is for a Director, Head of US Public Policy at Cloudflare. The primary focus is on addressing US policy issues related to cybersecurity, AI, data protection/privacy, and intermediary liability. The responsibilities include leading government-facing advocacy, evaluating policy conversations, developing US policy strategy, engaging with trade associations, and building relationships with policymakers and external organizations. The role requires extensive experience working with US federal regulators and officials, a deep understanding of relevant laws and regulations, and strong communication skills. While AI is mentioned as a technology area of focus for policy, the role itself is not directly involved in building or researching AI.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead Cloudflare’s government-facing advocacy in the United States.
  2. Evaluate US policy conversations and legislative developments, and work to understand the impact on Cloudflare across its full product set.
  3. Develop US policy strategy that is aligned with Cloudflare's international public policy efforts and global business priorities.
  4. Participate in and shape Cloudflare’s engagement with trade associations, including building and crafting positioning and key initiatives**.
  5. Develop talking points, policy narratives and presentation materials for use at external events and meetings and for other communication purposes (company blog, position papers etc.).

Skills

Required

  • 12+ years of experience working closely with US federal regulators and officials, as well trade associations and industry groups.
  • Deep understanding of US laws, regulations and policy developments important to Cloudflare as well as associated rule making and legislative processes.
  • Experience drafting or substantively reviewing proposed legislative text, regulatory comments, and formal policy submissions.
  • Strong network of US regulators, officials, peers, and industry stakeholders
  • Fluency in and proven passion for cutting edge technology.
  • Strong communications (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to articulate complex policy issues to executive audiences.
  • Detail oriented, well organized and a sense of initiative
  • The ability to manage many issues and engage with multiple teams within Cloudflare

Nice to have

  • JD or applicable graduate degree desirable
  • Experience within a tech or telecoms company is preferred.
  • Curiosity and willingness to experiment with new technologies, ways of working, and policy approaches.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Team player, and a sense of humor
