Box is seeking a Director, Japan Legal to lead and manage all commercial legal matters in Japan. This role involves leading the Japan Legal team, overseeing contract negotiations, managing legal risks, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Japanese law, contract negotiation, and leadership.

What you'd actually do

  1. Developing and implementing the Japan Legal strategy and procedures in line with the Global Legal team.
  2. Organizing and establishing day-to-day management of the Japan Legal team member and processes in line with agreed objectives and the Japan GTM’s strategic plan.
  3. Lead negotiation and drafting of complex commercial contracts to protect the company’s interests while enabling business growth.
  4. Lead the provision of legal advice to the Japan Leadership Team and the team member in K.K. Box Japan’s business activities and in proffering solutions to legal issues, constraints, risks, options, consequences and approaches.
  5. Collaborate with business leaders on updates and revisions to programs and Box policies where needed.

Skills

Required

  • Work experience in a law firm or the legal department of a commercial entity in Japan (more than 10 years)
  • Knowledge of Japanese law and some familiarity of Anglo-American law
  • Proven track record in negotiating and drafting complex commercial contracts
  • Native level Japanese with the ability to communicate in English (business level)
  • Qualified lawyer or Legal educational background (law degree or law school graduate)
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  • Commercially minded with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrating leadership capabilities, including ability to manage team members to attain goals.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information, GDPR and/or US privacy legislation is preferable.
  • Love to learn new technologies, tools and eager to grow continuously.
