Director of Engineering, Messaging Infrastructure

Klaviyo Klaviyo · Enterprise · Dublin, Ireland · Engineering

Lead the engineering teams responsible for Klaviyo's core messaging infrastructure, focusing on scalability, reliability, deliverability, compliance, and developer velocity across multiple communication channels. The role involves setting technical strategy, architecting for scale, ensuring operational excellence, and fostering a high-performing engineering organization. A key aspect is the integration and experimentation with AI to enhance workflows and productivity.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own the messaging platform end to end (ingestion, orchestration, templating/rendering, scheduling, routing, send, feedback loops, analytics)—with clear SLOs, scalable multi-region architecture, and a measurable reliability posture (e.g., error budgets, MTTR, incident rate).
  2. Increase deliverability & throughput by advancing our MTA/SMS provider strategies, queueing and rate-limiting, channel-specific features (e.g., pre-flight checks, warm-up), and feedback processing (bounces, complaints, carrier responses).
  3. Harden compliance & safety in partnership with Legal/Privacy (e.g., consent/state management, opt-out, quiet hours, TCPA/CAN‑SPAM/CTIA/GDPR-aware workflows) to protect customers and their end-users.
  4. Accelerate developer velocity for channel teams via clear APIs, SDKs, contracts, documentation, and paved-road tooling (test environments, canaries, shadow traffic, feature flags, progressive delivery).
  5. Build and scale a high-performing org of managers and senior ICs; raise the talent bar through crisp expectations, transparent feedback, and career growth paths aligned to Klaviyo’s standards.
