Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Director, Oncology Public Affairs to lead the development and execution of strategic public affairs and advocacy initiatives for their U.S. Oncology business. This role involves identifying and advancing opportunities to strengthen the external environment for their in-market portfolio and pipeline, focusing on patient access and long-term growth. The individual will act as a strategic partner, building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including business leaders, government affairs, patient advocacy groups, and professional societies. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing public affairs strategies, advancing policy positions, leveraging platforms to strengthen the company's voice, building stakeholder networks, and managing sensitive issues. The role requires a deep understanding of business strategy, access dynamics, and the policy landscape.

What you'd actually do

  1. Develop and implement public affairs and advocacy strategies that help enable faster and broader patient access to Johnson & Johnson’s oncology medicines, in close partnership with brand, market access, Government Affairs and policy teams across the portfolio.
  2. Help advance Johnson & Johnson’s position on policy matters in relation to patient access, portfolio growth, or the United States’ leadership in innovative medicine, ensuring positions are grounded in business priorities and patient impact.
  3. Use existing enterprise, policy, and reputation platforms (such as the Oncology Care Index and the Center for U.S. Healthcare Policy Research) to strengthen Johnson & Johnson’s voice, advance oncology policy priorities, and reinforce the company’s leadership in innovation, access, and patient-centered care.
  4. Build and sustain strong networks with advocacy organizations, professional societies and other key stakeholders to help shape the external environment and build aligned support on issues that matter most to the business and the patients and customers we serve.
  5. Anticipate and manage sensitive issues with care and sound judgment, identifying emerging risks early and partnering across the business to shape thoughtful, coordinated responses that protect reputation and support continued access and innovation.

Skills

Required

  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience
  • Experience in public affairs, politics, policy communications, advocacy
  • Strong communications skills, including engaging with executive leadership
  • Strong writing and messaging ability
  • Experience with external affairs development and execution
  • Broad understanding of pricing policy and standards in engaging policymakers and KOLs
  • Ability to develop relationships externally and internally
  • Ability to engage with business partners, understand commercial and business strategy and support that strategy through public affairs.

Nice to have

  • Media Relations industry experience
  • Ability to lead in times of ambiguity, strong influencing skills
