This role focuses on researching and measuring the economic effects of AI, developing the Anthropic Economic Index using novel data sources and privacy-preserving tools, and applying frontier methods in econometrics and machine learning. The goal is to understand AI's impact on labor markets, productivity, and economic transformation, influencing policy and product decisions.

What you'd actually do

  1. Make fundamental contributions to the development and expansion of the [Anthropic Economic Index](https://www.anthropic.com/economic-index), including quarterly reports and industry-specific deep dives
  2. Design and conduct empirical research on AI's economic effects using novel data sources and privacy-preserving measurement systems
  3. Develop new methodological approaches for studying AI's impact on:
  4. Build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and other research partners
  5. Translate research insights into actionable recommendations for both product decisions and policy discussions

Skills

Required

  • PhD in Economics or related field with a focus on labor economics, industrial organization, or technological change
  • Strong track record of empirical research, particularly studies combining novel data sources and economic theory or those implementing frontier methods in causal inference
  • Experience with labor market analysis and occupational change
  • Experience with task-based approaches to technological transformation
  • Experience with large-scale data analysis and econometric methods
  • Experience with large language models for social science research
  • Experience with policy-relevant economic research
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for large-scale data analysis
  • Experience working with novel datasets and measurement systems
  • Comfort learning new technical tools and frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex research projects from conception to publication
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical findings to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across academic, policy, and industry communities
  • Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity
  • Comfort working with AI systems and ability to think critically about their capabilities and limitations
