Engineer Perception System Integration (m/f/d)

John Deere John Deere · Industrial · KL, RP, DE · Product Engineering (CA)

Engineer responsible for integrating perception systems, including sensors like cameras, lidar, and radar, onto real machine platforms. This involves working across software, electronics, and sensing to ensure seamless operation of automation technologies in agriculture and construction machinery. The role spans the full development cycle from ideation to field validation and performance evaluation, with a focus on system-level integration and problem-solving.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design, integrate, and test outdoor perception systems involving data loggers, embedded computing, and sensors such as cameras, lidar, radar, and GPS receivers.
  2. Drive the integration of new perception and automation technologies on real machine platforms, solving practical system-level challenges in demanding operating environments.
  3. Contribute across the full development cycle, from early concept ideation to system integration, field validation, and performance evaluation.
  4. Plan, coordinate, and participate in field tests for data collection and performance verification of complex perception and machine automation systems.
  5. Analyze experimental data independently to assess system performance, identify limitations, and diagnose technical issues during integration or testing.

Skills

Required

  • Understanding of the design principles, functionality, and practical challenges of outdoor perception and image processing systems.
  • Experience with embedded systems, Linux scripting and CLI usage, common Linux system administration tasks.
  • Software development skills in C++ and/or Python
  • System integration skills across software, electronics, sensors, and mechanical systems, including the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues under time pressure.
  • Background in robotics, autonomous systems, or intelligent machines, with the ability to address practical system design and integration challenges on physical platforms.
  • Good coordination and execution skills for field work and testing activities, both independently and in small teams of up to 3–4 members.
  • Ability and willingness to learn quickly, adapt to new technical areas, and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work independently in a structured, pragmatic, and results-oriented manner.
  • Ability to use modern AI tools responsibly and effectively in relevant work situations.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in both German and English.
