Engineering Manager 1 responsible for leading a team of 5-10 mechanical engineers in production support for nuclear navy power generation equipment, focusing on large rotating mechanical systems. Responsibilities include managing design, production, testing, issue resolution, talent development, and ensuring adherence to procedures. Requires a STEM degree, engineering experience, and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.

What you'd actually do

  1. Manage day-to-day activities for engineering, including resource planning, procedure review, critical skills management and development, continuous improvement in both process and product, along with critical problem resolution.
  2. Manage the design, construction, and assembly of production hardware and ensure proper maintenance of applicable procedures.
  3. Manage the resolution of emergent issues in a timely manner while keeping upper management informed of the progress including participating in root cause and correction action investigations.
  4. Manage non-conformance resolutions in the areas of generators, magnetic bearings, complex weldment structures, and turbines.
  5. Track critical skills within your team’s domain to ensure knowledge is retained

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline with 5 years of relevant engineering experience; OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline with 3 years of relevant engineering experience
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to perform problem analysis and resolution including Root Cause Investigations using lean and continuous improvement tools.
  • Experience with design, integration, and testing of mechanical systems
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple products/programs with the focus on delivering within cost and on schedule.
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, interpersonal skills, and the ability to interface with all involved employees.

Nice to have

  • Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline (preferred Electrical Engineering or Controls).
  • Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or other demonstrated leadership role related to program execution.
  • Experience with large scale rotating machinery, especially in naval applications.
  • Experience with turbine design.
  • Experience with design and integration of complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities.
  • Experience with proposals development and Earned Value Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks.
