With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.
Authorization is a key component, deep inside many user-facing product calls (e.g. YouTube, Workspace), serving millions of QPS and managing several petabytes of data. Within Authorization, Plumber specifically supports the indexing of ACLs so that searches can be ACL-aware.
The criticality of our systems is what makes this team so interesting: in most interactions that people have with Google products, there is an ACL check or search buried in the stack. Our availability is necessary for these products to function, and our correctness is necessary to guarantee data protection and what privacy customers expect from Google.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
US: $207000 - $301000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities
- Address system resilience with new client requirements, expand to AI and Cloud use cases, and deepen Workspace engagements.
- Enable AI and Cloud future-facing infrastructure needs: ensure that Plumber can meet current and future Cloud commitments and participate in defining the agentic identity problem space.
- Improve system reliability and rationalize the integration with Zanzibar and UDCS ACL components.
- Collaborate with other leads within Authorization as well as driving efforts with ST-Spanner, Drive, Cloud, and storage ecosystem components.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in software development.
- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects.
- 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
- Experience designing and implementing information retrieval systems (e.g., search engines, indexing, or ranking systems).
- Experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience one or more of the following: Pod, Spanner, Bigtable, or Flume.
