Enterprise Solutions Architect, Engineering Platform Services

Workday Workday · Enterprise · Pleasanton, CA

Workday is seeking an Enterprise Solutions Architect to define architectural direction for their Engineering Platform Services team, focusing on integrating AI and automation into platform services, including LLM-powered tooling and predictive operations. The role involves hands-on coding, leading design reviews, prototyping, and making multi-year architectural decisions to ensure a cohesive, scalable, and secure ecosystem.

What you'd actually do

  1. Define Architectural Vision: Own end-to-end solution architecture across ITSM/ESM, DevOps, and Platform AI; establish reference architectures and design guardrails that drive consistency and scalability.
  2. Embed AI-Forward Design: Lead integration of AI and automation into platform services - including LLM-powered tooling and predictive ops - ensuring capabilities are secure, auditable, and reusable.
  3. Accelerate DevOps & Developer Experience: Define SDLC and DevSecOps standards to drive automation that reduces toil and shortens delivery cycles.
  4. Evolve Service Management Platforms: Architect scalable, AI-ready ITSM/ESM solutions with ServiceNow including integrations, workflow automation, and self-service capabilities aligned with ITIL best practices.
  5. Lead & Influence: Conduct architectural reviews, guide technology selection, mentor platform engineers, and represent the team in cross-functional forums and standards bodies.

Skills

Required

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or enterprise architecture.
  • 12+ years of hands-on software development proficiency; active ability to write, review, and refactor production-quality code across one or more languages (e.g., Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or Go).
  • 8+ years of experience designing and building ITSM processes using ServiceNow, including enterprise-scale design and integration.
  • 8+ years of experience with DevOps practices and toolchains including CI/CD, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • 8+ years of experience architecting and delivering enterprise-wide solutions that are secure, observable, and highly available.
  • 5+ years of experience integrating AI or ML capabilities into enterprise platforms or workflows.

Nice to have

  • Deep understanding of AI-forward design practices including LLM integration patterns, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, prompt engineering, and responsible AI principles.
  • Experience designing integrations across heterogeneous systems using REST APIs, event-driven architectures, and messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka, Azure Service Bus).
  • Strong understanding of platform reliability practices including observability, SLO/SLA frameworks, incident management, and operational runbooks.
  • Demonstrated experience leading architectural reviews, driving cross-functional design decisions, and building consensus across engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex architectural decisions for both technical peers and senior non-technical leaders.
  • Comfort operating with high autonomy in a fast-paced, matrixed environment; strong bias toward action and outcome.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect (Professional), TOGAF, or ServiceNow Certified Technical Architect (CTA) are a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
