Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering & Technical Program Manager

OpenAI OpenAI · AI Frontier · San Francisco, CA · Workplace

This role is for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager focused on supporting hardware engineering, research and development, and technical operations environments. The primary responsibilities include assessing and controlling exposure risks, strengthening safe work practices, building scalable EHS programs, and providing EHS advisory input on product and equipment safety. The role emphasizes operational judgment, field presence, and collaboration with technical teams to ensure regulatory compliance and safety in fast-moving environments.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead EHS programs supporting hardware engineering, research and development, and technical operations environments across multiple sites, with emphasis on industrial hygiene and product and equipment safety risks.
  2. Conduct exposure and hazard assessments across chemical, physical, and operational risks and implement effective controls aligned with the hierarchy of controls.
  3. Develop, maintain, and scale SOPs and safety standards for technical workflows, equipment use, materials handling, and high-risk operations.
  4. Partner with engineering and technical teams to embed safety-by-design principles into equipment, workspaces, and evolving technical processes.
  5. Provide EHS advisory support on product and equipment safety, helping identify hazards during development, testing, and deployment phases.
