Environmental Permitting and Compliance Engineer

Seeking an Environmental Engineer to lead environmental due diligence, permitting, monitoring, and compliance for Saronic's Port Alpha shipyard. Responsibilities include site assessments, managing environmental risks for development, establishing compliance programs (air, water, waste), and coordinating with regulatory agencies. Requires 5+ years of experience in environmental permitting and compliance.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead environmental due diligence activities including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), site investigations, and coordination with environmental consultants.
  2. Develop and execute the environmental permitting strategy for shipyard development and waterfront infrastructure.
  3. Establish and oversee environmental compliance programs including air permits, hazardous and industrial waste management, stormwater pollution prevention (SWPPP), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), and wastewater discharge permits.
  4. Develop and manage environmental monitoring and inspection programs including stormwater monitoring, water quality monitoring, wetlands monitoring, and construction environmental compliance inspections.
  5. Serve as a primary environmental liaison with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), EPA, and state environmental agencies, supporting permit applications, regulatory interactions, and agency inspections.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Public Health, or related environmental discipline
  • 5+ years of environmental permitting, compliance, or environmental consulting experience
  • Experience conducting or managing Environmental Site Assessments (Phase I and Phase II)
  • Experience working with coastal environmental regulations, wetlands permitting, or waterfront development
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations including EPA programs
  • Experience preparing environmental regulatory reports such as Tier II, TRI, hazardous waste reports, or air emissions inventories
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Nice to have

  • Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Experience supporting shipyards, ports, maritime infrastructure, or waterfront industrial development
  • Direct experience with USACE permitting processes
  • Experience with brownfield redevelopment and remediation programs
  • Experience with wetlands permitting, dredging permits, or coastal resource protection
  • Experience preparing environmental reports in US coastal states
  • Professional certifications such as: CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), Professional Engineer (P.E.), Environmental Professional (EP)
  • Experience managing multi-media environmental compliance programs
  • Minimum of 5 years managing muti-media environmental compliance programs.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing effective Environmental programs and initiatives, with a focus on regulatory risk and NOV reduction/avoidance.
