This role is for an Employee Relations (ER) Manager in Tokyo, Japan, supporting various Amazon business lines. The primary responsibilities include investigating HR and employee relations issues, providing labor relations support, and collaborating with stakeholders. The role also involves analyzing trends, proposing strategic recommendations, and managing crisis-oriented situations. While the company utilizes AI tools in daily operations and encourages learning about AI, the core function of this role is not directly related to building or deploying AI/ML models.

What you'd actually do

  1. Investigate HR and Employee Relations issues including conducting interviews with complainants, witnesses, and subject employees, analyzing data from internal systems, adjudicating cases, proposing remedial actions based on findings, and producing documentation for completed investigations. For complex cases, this role includes leading and directing the investigation. When individual investigators conduct investigations, this role requires providing guidance, direction, and audit oversight on investigation methods.
  2. Analyze casework trends and produce strategic recommendations to the HR business to proactively address systemic issues.
  3. The individual serves as the primary point of contact for labour relations matters, working closely with management, employees, and union representatives to address workplace concerns and maintain harmonious working relationships.
  4. Consult and collaborate with business partners, HR team, Corporate and CS ER teams, and Legal teams on complex employee investigations.
  5. Help set up and operate ER related programs in Japan, working alongside dedicated teams.

Skills

Required

  • Professional experience in using English and Japanese (writing, reading, listening and speaking required)
  • 5+ years of human resources, labor relations, investigative or legal experience
  • Experience in case management of labor/employee relations work
  • Experience in partnering with global stakeholders
  • Experience in MS Office tools such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice to have

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, ER or related field of study
  • Advanced degree, or other specialized training in labor/employee relations
  • Previous Employee Relations experience
  • Previous experience in diverse organizational environments (customer service, corporate office functions, manufacturing, distribution, etc.)
