Flight Test Operator

Anduril Anduril · Defense · Costa Mesa, CA · Maritime & Maneuver Dominance : Maneuver Dominance Engineering : Field Test Engineering

This role is for a Flight Test Operator at Anduril, a defense technology company. The role involves planning, executing, and certifying complex Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) missions, with a focus on BVLOS operations. Responsibilities include acting as a Safety Pilot, conducting pre-flight/in-flight/post-flight checks, operating and troubleshooting UAS systems (specifically Pixhawk and Cube Orange Flight Controllers), developing risk assessments based on MIL-STD-882E, maintaining logs, collaborating with engineering teams, and ensuring FAA Part 107 compliance. The role requires a Part 107 pilot license, significant UAS/RC aircraft operation experience, and technical proficiency with flight controllers. While the company uses AI and autonomy, this specific role is focused on flight operations and testing, not AI/ML model development.

What you'd actually do

  1. Plan, prepare, and execute UAS missions, including those within challenging VLOS and BVLOS scenarios, ensuring full compliance with mission objectives and regulatory requirements.
  2. Act as Safety Pilot, conducting manual flight operations with fixed wing and FW VTOL UAS in challenging and complex multi-UAS operations.
  3. Conduct pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks and diagnostics on UAS platforms and associated ground control systems.
  4. Operate and troubleshoot various UAS systems, demonstrating advanced proficiency with Pixhawk and Cube Orange Flight Controllers, including configuration, firmware and parameter management, and mission planning using relevant ground control station software.
  5. Develop and implement mission-specific risk assessments, meticulously applying Department of Defense Standard Practice System Safety (MIL-STD-882E) principles to ensure the safe and compliant execution of operations.
