Hardware Prototype Engineering Technician

DoorDash Labs is seeking a Hardware Prototype Engineering Technician to service and assemble autonomous delivery robots and other automation solutions. The role involves hands-on work with electromechanical systems, test platforms, and robotic vehicles, including assembly, repair, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis. The technician will also manage component procurement and collaborate with engineering teams.

What you'd actually do

  1. Assemble, repair, and troubleshoot complex electromechanical systems, including test platforms and robotic vehicles
  2. Own the end-to-end build and delivery of test fixtures and prototypes
  3. Develop and create wiring harnesses, assemble compute systems, and integrate electronics and sensors
  4. Perform root cause analysis, calibration, and diagnostics on vehicle and computer systems
  5. Maintain a structured inventory and lab environment to ensure organization and efficiency

Skills

Required

  • 5+ years of hands-on technical experience in mechanical, electrical, computer, automotive, or robotics industries
  • Demonstrated ability to assemble prototypes, build wiring harnesses, and follow engineering instructions precisely
  • Strong understanding of schematics, datasheets, and the ability to interpret them accurately
  • Experience soldering, crimping, and working with cable management in lab or shop environments
  • Proficiency with tools and equipment including 3D printers, diagnostic instruments, and common shop power tools and machinery
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and solving difficult technical challenges
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a strong ability to manage inventory systems
  • Willingness to work on-site and in the field as needed
  • Able to lift up to 40 lbs and work in a hands-on lab/warehouse environment
  • Valid U.S. drivers license required

Nice to have

  • Skills in manual machining, welding, composites, or other fabrication techniques
  • Background in automotive repair or vehicle system maintenance
  • Hobbies building robots, RC Cars Boats or Drones or playing with Arduinos/RPIs
  • Knowledge of CAD software (Solidworks, Onshape etc) for 3D model navigation and design edits
  • Familiarity with Python or other programming languages for automation or troubleshooting
  • Experience with Linux for robotic system testing and integration
  • Through-hole and Surface Mount (SMD) (SMT) PCB soldering
  • Experience working with AV hardware such as LiDARs, radars, and cameras
  • Ability to design and prototype custom wiring harnesses and understand harness drawings
