Industrial Design Architect (me/pde)

Meta Meta · Big Tech · Seattle, WA

This role is for an Industrial Design Architect at Meta Reality Labs, focusing on mechanical engineering for next-generation hardware. The role involves creating physical products from concept to production, collaborating with design and engineering teams, and leveraging external partners. While the role mentions integrating AI tools for workflow optimization and adhering to ethical AI practices, the core craft is mechanical engineering and industrial design, not AI/ML development.

What you'd actually do

  1. Collaborate closely with the Industrial Design team to develop technical solutions ranging from high-level experience prototypes to detailed, functional designs
  2. Drive rapid concept exploration, iterative prototyping, and mechanical implementation of inventive design features and mechanisms
  3. Push the state of the art of physical technology integration, component optimization, and manufacturing processes
  4. Create and refine effective ways to address complex ergonomic challenges
  5. Partner closely with Product Design Engineering and other internal teams to enable design intent and rapidly move projects forward

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • 5+ years of experience developing high-volume consumer electronics or wearable tech products
  • Expertise in creating high-fidelity mockups, mechanisms, and rapid prototypes
  • Experience designing plastic and metal parts for high volume manufacturing processes
  • Expertise in 3D CAD modeling at the detail and assembly level in NX, Creo, or Solidworks, including complex surfacing
  • Experience working collaboratively with ID, ME, EE, and PM teams
  • Proven communication, visualization, and problem solving skills
  • Excelling in highly ambiguous situations
  • 7+ years of product design and development experience of handheld and/or wearable electronics for high volume manufacturing, including full systems ownership
  • Experience with highly cosmetic products and working closely with Industrial Design
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, geometric tolerancing
  • Experience leading technical projects and directing development activities
  • Experience defining product-level mechanical architectures

Nice to have

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
