Industrial Design Intern

Verkada is seeking an Industrial Design Intern to design and develop hardware products like cameras and access control systems. The role involves contributing to the brand's design language, conducting user research, prototyping, and collaborating with hardware engineers. The intern will gain experience in a fast-paced tech environment, working on state-of-the-art products.

What you'd actually do

  1. Contribute to the visual and physical language of our brand through the design of our hardware.
  2. Utilize user-centric thinking and keen aesthetic sensibility to align our brand to customer needs.
  3. Support the design team in conducting research on user needs, market trends, and competitive analysis to inform product design decisions.
  4. Assist in the development and refinement of product prototypes, participating in user testing and feedback sessions to iteratively improve designs.
  5. Collaborate with our hardware engineering team to explore, prototype & test new product concepts to finalize form, CMF & UX.

Skills

Required

  • Website or digital portfolio
  • Senior-level industrial design student or recent graduate
  • Positive attitude and proactive mentality
  • High level of sensitivity to form and function, attention to detail, and conceptual clarity
  • Generalist approach to technical skills: design strategy, customer insights, form development, sketching, physical prototyping, package design, 3D modeling, and CMF exploration and selection
  • Strong physical prototyping skills, particularly in 3d printing and working with wood and foam
  • Proficient in 2D & 3D digital tools like Solidworks, Rhino, Fusion360, Keyshot, Adobe Suite, etc.
  • Experience working directly with mechanical and electrical engineers
  • Strong understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and production timelines
  • Ability to generate and communicate design vision, or embrace and extend existing solutions

Nice to have

  • Experience with cameras, environmental sensors, control systems, sensor sub-assemblies, or connected devices
  • Experience designing products for harsh environments
