The Industrial Hygienist will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling occupational health hazards in a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing environment. This role requires expertise in industrial hygiene programs, exposure assessment, risk monitoring, hazard control, chemical safety, and medical surveillance, ensuring compliance with OSHA and corporate standards.

What you'd actually do

  1. Serve as the site’s Industrial Hygiene Subject Matter Expert, providing technical guidance to leadership, operations, and engineering teams.
  2. Develop, implement, and continuously improve site IH programs to ensure full compliance with OSHA, state, local, and corporate occupational health requirements.
  3. Design and execute qualitative and quantitative exposure monitoring plans (personal and area sampling) for physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards.
  4. Evaluate and mitigate specialized risks including battery dusts/materials, solvents/VOCs, electrolyte constituents, thermal emissions, noise, lasers, and radiation.
  5. Investigate potential overexposures and collaborate with Engineering and Operations to design, validate, and optimize engineering controls (e.g., local exhaust ventilation, dust collection, process enclosure).

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Toxicology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific/technical field
  • 5+ years of progressive industrial hygiene experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Proven experience conducting chemical and physical exposure assessments, managing medical surveillance, and implementing engineering controls (e.g., ventilation, respiratory protection, noise, heat stress, ergonomics, and HazCom)
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational health standards
  • Excellent project management and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across all levels (hourly employees, engineers, leadership, and external stakeholders)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialized IH data management systems

Nice to have

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential
  • Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Toxicology, or Engineering
  • Experience in high-hazard, specialized, or cleanroom manufacturing environments (e.g., battery manufacturing, chemical processing, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, automotive)
  • Background supporting large-scale startup/greenfield facilities and managing third-party consultants
