Infectious Disease Scientist

Merck Merck · Pharma · PA

Research Scientist in Infectious Disease and Vaccines group, focusing on HIV Discovery. Responsibilities include supporting in vivo rodent studies, performing biomarker assays (ELISA, qPCR), developing novel assays, and maintaining lab equipment. Requires BS/MS with 3/1 years of lab experience, rodent handling, and immunoassay/molecular techniques.

What you'd actually do

  1. Support and execute in vivo rodent studies, including cage maintenance, animal handling, dosing (IP, SQ, IV, PO), and blood/tissue collection.
  2. Process biological samples and perform biomarker assays (ELISA, qPCR and other immunoassays) to generate high-quality data for HIV programs.
  3. Run standardized, validated biological assays and document results according to laboratory procedures and data integrity standards.
  4. Develop and optimize novel biomarker assays and support assay validation and troubleshooting.
  5. Maintain lab equipment, prepare reagents, and ensure compliance with biosafety protocols for handling HIV-positive materials.

Skills

Required

  • BS or MS in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related life-science discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on research lab experience for BS candidates, or minimum 1 year for MS candidates (experience beyond classroom coursework required).
  • Experience with rodent handling and small-animal procedures, including injections (IP, SQ, IV, PO) and blood sampling (IV, RO).
  • Hands-on experience with molecular and immunoassay techniques such as ELISA and qPCR.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, time management, and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and learn new laboratory instruments and automation platforms.
  • Ability to work with HIV-positive materials under appropriate biosafety conditions.
