Lab Engineer

Island is seeking a Lab Engineer to manage and evolve its internal lab infrastructure, supporting R&D, QA, and Escalation teams in reproducing real-world customer scenarios. The role involves owning and maintaining virtual and physical lab platforms, managing hybrid infrastructure, and setting up environments to simulate complex customer configurations. The engineer will partner with various teams to reproduce edge cases and field issues, acting as a bridge between customer-reported problems and engineering.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own and maintain Island's Virtual Lab platform and physical device lab, including provisioning, lifecycle management, and availability
  2. Manage hybrid lab infrastructure spanning physical hardware, virtual machines, and cloud-based environments
  3. Ensure lab environments are reliable, up-to-date, and ready for on-demand use by engineering teams
  4. Continuously improve lab tooling, automation, and self-service capabilities
  5. Partner with R&D, QA, and Escalation teams to build environments that replicate complex customer setups

Skills

Required

  • Hands-on experience managing lab environments, test infrastructure, or similar internal platforms
  • Strong understanding of enterprise IT ecosystems: Identity & Access: Okta, Azure Entra ID, SCIM, SAML; Security: DLP, EPP/EDR, CASB; Infrastructure: Windows Server, Active Directory, VDI, Linux administration; Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, proxies, SASE/ZTNA concepts
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies to match diverse customer environments
  • Creative problem-solving; comfort working across the full stack from packet-level networking to application-layer behavior
  • Strong collaboration skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM) or cloud lab orchestration
  • Familiarity with monitoring/logging tools (SIEM, Syslog, Splunk)
  • Scripting/automation skills (PowerShell, Bash, Python)
  • Background in QA, support engineering, or systems administration in a software company
