Lead Product Counsel

This role is for a Lead Product Counsel at an AI research and product company. The counsel will partner with various teams (Engineering, Growth, Research, Privacy, Security, Safety) to provide legal guidance on the development and launch of AI products. Responsibilities include advising on product design, AI safety, governance, privacy, IP, content policies, commercialization, drafting terms and policies, and monitoring global legal/regulatory developments impacting AI systems. The ideal candidate has 6+ years of product counseling and privacy experience, with a preference for AI product counseling and knowledge of AI-related laws and regulations.

What you'd actually do

  1. Partner cross-functionally with Engineering, Growth, Research, Privacy, Security, and Safety to provide pragmatic legal guidance throughout the product lifecycle.
  2. Advise on product features, user flows, marketing initiatives, and data practices.
  3. Draft and review user-facing terms, privacy policies, disclosures, and marketing materials to ensure compliance while supporting a high-quality user experience.
  4. Support incident response, privacy risk assessments, and escalation processes related to product use.
  5. Monitor evolving global legal and regulatory developments that impact AI systems, and translate them into practical internal policies and guidance.

Skills

Required

  • JD with active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (New York preferred)
  • 6+ years of product counseling and privacy knowledge and skills
  • Experience counseling on AI models and products
  • Maintain expertise in laws and regulations relevant to AI products and SaaS solutions, including privacy, data protection, consumer protection, content policies, and emerging AI-specific legislation.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills

Nice to have

  • preferably developed in both law firm and in-house roles (in-house product counseling experience strongly preferred)
