Lead Software Engineer - Autonomy/physical AI

Applied Intuition Applied Intuition · Robotics · Ann Arbor, MI · Government

Lead Software Engineer role focused on building backend C++ systems for physical AI and autonomy products in the defense sector. The role involves architecting, implementing, and owning high-performance infrastructure for autonomous operations in challenging environments, with a focus on shipping code and direct impact on national security.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and implement high-performance backend systems in C++ for Axion and Acuity, Applied's core defense autonomy products
  2. Tackle hard autonomy challenges across multi-domain environments, from unmanned ground and aerial platforms to broader joint-force integration scenarios
  3. Build scalable, reliable infrastructure that enables autonomous systems to operate in contested and degraded conditions
  4. Partner closely with autonomy researchers, product teams, and defense customers to translate mission requirements into robust software solutions
  5. Own end-to-end execution of high-stakes engineering workstreams; architecture through deployment
