New Relic's observability platform is trusted by organizations globally to facilitate better software development through data-driven insights. Logs constitute a core element of this platform. To begin understanding a system, the initial step is transmitting logs and other telemetry to New Relic. Our thousands of customers depend on their logs, analyzing petabytes of log data, to effectively detect and resolve issues.
We are a heavily backend-focused team responsible for developing highly distributed, high-throughput data processing streaming components that consume and produce Kafka topics, built entirely in Java. Additionally, we develop the Java APIs that power the user experiences for log management. We also take ownership of our system's reliability, maintaining an active on-call rotation to support both our APIs and streaming services.
We are seeking a Senior Frontend Engineer to provide strategic, technical leadership within this fast-growing team. While we are looking for a true Frontend specialist rather than a generalist "full-stack" developer, it is crucial that you have a solid backend background. Your primary focus will be leading frontend initiatives across Log Management. This includes leading the frontend work for Logs Intelligence—a new and critical suite of AI-driven innovations—as well as driving the development of new user experiences in other key product areas like Log Compliance and Log Ingestion features. Your backend expertise will empower you to develop supporting APIs, occasionally contribute to backend services, and confidently participate in our team's on-call rotation. What you’ll do
- Lead the development and maintenance of customer-facing UIs that interface with complex, high-throughput data streaming systems across Logs Intelligence, Log Compliance, and Log Ingestion.
- Develop and maintain robust Java-based backend services and APIs that specifically feed the log management user experiences.
- Actively participate in the team's on-call rotation, taking on reliability work to triage and support both our APIs and our highly distributed streaming services.
- Leverage agentic AI technologies and modern AI coding assistants as daily tools to accelerate and enhance the software development lifecycle.
- Work collaboratively with product managers, designers, architects, researchers, and other engineers to ship software incrementally with frequent customer feedback.
- Contribute to code reviews, evangelize engineering standards, and mentor more junior team members.
This role requires
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, operating as a dedicated Frontend specialist but possessing a strong, practical background in backend development.
- Expertise in React, TypeScript, including hooks, state management, and component-based architecture.
- Hands-on experience leveraging agentic AI tools (e.g., AI coding assistants) to improve engineering efficiency.
- Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to implement and build product features or solutions.
- Proficiency in frontend unit testing and automated end-to-end testing using frameworks like Playwright.
- Good communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders using Slack, Zoom, and documentation tools such as Confluence and Google Docs/Presentations.
Bonus points if you have
- Some experience in Java, NodeJS or Python for backend API development, with the ability to navigate and understand complex backend systems to participate effectively in on-call triage and occasional backend contributions.
- Familiarity with streaming platforms like Kafka and an understanding of highly distributed systems.
- Experience working on products that handle extremely high data throughput.
- Previous experience deeply involved in site reliability work or maintaining complex streaming pipelines.
