This role is for a Legal Counsel specializing in HR Investigations within GEICO's in-house Employment Law Department. The primary responsibility is to conduct and oversee HR investigations related to employee misconduct, policy violations, and compliance concerns. The role involves advising HR and stakeholders on investigation strategy, findings, and remedial measures, as well as conducting training for HR investigation teams. It also includes leading complex investigations, interviewing relevant parties, reviewing evidence, and preparing investigation reports. Additionally, the role supports litigation and administrative charge responses, monitors employment law trends, and ensures compliance with legal requirements and best practices.

What you'd actually do

  1. Advise and support HR investigators on formulating investigation plans, identifying relevant evidence, and making factual findings.
  2. Review and provide feedback on investigation reports and ensure conclusions are legally sound and factually supported.
  3. Advise on proposed remediation, disciplinary actions, or corrective measures based on investigation outcomes.
  4. Serve as a dedicated resource and conduct training for HR investigation teams on conducting investigations in compliance with legal requirements and best practices.
  5. Lead independent, prompt, and thorough investigations into complex or high-risk workplace complaints and policy violations.

Skills

Required

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Five (5) or more years of conducting and/or overseeing HR investigations at a law firm, government, in-house legal department, and/or corporate HR department.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to balance legal risk and practical business objectives.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, both legal and non-legal.
  • Experience handling employment litigation and/or administrative agency complaints and charges
  • Prior insurance industry experience.

What the JD emphasized
