Machinist IV role responsible for setting up and operating conventional lathes, mills, vertical and horizontal boring mills to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. Requires studying blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances, selecting and aligning tools, calculating machining factors, and verifying compliance of finished workpieces.

What you'd actually do

  1. Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to follow the sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  3. Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
  4. Select, align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes and grinders.
  5. Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut.

Skills

Required

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to accurately complete all work-related documents
  • Understand basic operating principles for all plant machinery
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and deal with problems

Nice to have

  • Journeyman Machinist
  • Provincial Trade Certification or Red Seal
  • Qualified Machinist apprentices
