Mainframe Tape Storage Infrastructure Engineer

This role focuses on engineering and maintaining mainframe tape storage infrastructure within a large enterprise, specifically at Bank of America. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and supporting storage systems, ensuring compliance with standards, and participating in on-call rotations. What you'd actually do

  1. Provides subject matter expertise and consulting services on a range of technologies and assists Technical Analysts and Infrastructure Engineers to ensure that technology solutions comply with enterprise system design and engineering standards
  2. Assists with translating business requirements into technical definitions, reference models, blueprints, and playbooks for deployment in compliance with architecture standards and policies
  3. Assists in the evaluation of reference models, blueprints and playbooks to ensure they are fit for purpose
  4. Develops software solutions to address manual and repeatable work or inefficient processes
  5. Conducts on-site evaluations of third-party products being considered for firm adoption

Skills

Required

  • 7 + years of hands‑on experience supporting enterprise mainframe storage environments
  • Proven experience in 24x7, mission‑critical, highly regulated production environments
  • Experience operating at scale (multi‑data center, multi‑region, global firms)
  • z/OS I/O architecture (CHPIDs, control units, paths)
  • FICON protocols and multi‑pathing concepts
  • I/O performance diagnostics (RMF, SMF, DCOLLECT)
  • Experience working closely with z/OS systems programmers

Nice to have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Advanced technical certifications and vendor training preferred
  • Leadership of SMEs With Skills and/or Knowledge Of Assembler
