Manager, Hil Platform Engineering

Aurora Innovation Aurora Innovation · Robotics · Mountain View, CA · Software Platform Software & Services

Manager, HIL Platform Engineering at Aurora Innovation, leading a team that builds and manages a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platform for autonomous vehicles. The role focuses on operationalizing the platform as a product, driving technical trade-offs, managing project lifecycles, and mentoring the team to ensure the safety and reliability of self-driving trucks.

What you'd actually do

  1. Operationalize the Platform as a Product: Transform internal hardware and simulation tools into a reliable, "customer-centric" service that enables Autonomy engineers to ship code with confidence and speed.
  2. Drive Strategic Technical Trade-offs: Evaluate complex architectural proposals—such as build-vs-buy on hardware rigs or cloud vs. local simulation—balancing immediate project needs with long-term platform scalability.
  3. Master Project Lifecycle & Execution: Manage the end-to-end delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects, from initial requirements gathering with cross-functional stakeholders to laboratory deployment and maintenance.
  4. Mentor and Scale the Team: Foster a high-performance culture by coaching engineers on technical excellence and career growth, while recruiting top-tier talent to meet the evolving demands of our truck programs.
  5. Bridge Software and Physical Reality: Act as the primary interface between pure software teams and vehicle hardware teams, ensuring the platform accurately reflects the complexities of an autonomous truck.
