Manufacturing Project Engineer

Caterpillar's Electrification & Energy Solutions (E+ES) Division is seeking a Manufacturing Project Engineer in Wuxi, China. This role will focus on the manufacturing and assembly processes for battery module, string, and pack/group product lines. Responsibilities include project leadership for prototype and production manufacturing, ensuring data traceability, driving continuous improvement in safety, quality, velocity, and cost, interfacing with various global teams, documenting build issues and improvements, developing PFMEAs and control plans, acting as a trusted advisor during NPI and Design Reviews for DFMA, working with suppliers on manufacturing requirements, ensuring robust standard work and process controls, and replicating best practices globally. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field and over 5 years of manufacturing and assembly project leadership experience, with expertise in automation, manufacturing processes, assembly, facilities, and project management. Experience with NPI, change management, facility layouts, PFMEAs, control plans, capital expenditures, and automation is also required.

What you'd actually do

  1. Project leadership of E+ES product’s prototype and production manufacturing and assembly processes, equipment, capacity, and utilization both currently and strategically into the future.
  2. Ensure all relevant build parameters and assembly related data include full traceability for warranty/claims review, and this data captured at the supply base is fed into and stored into Caterpillar’s systems for retention and review.
  3. Provide ideas for continuous improvement (CI) to the safety, quality, velocity, and cost of manufacturing and assembly operations, regularly improving takt time / cycle times as product confidence and build methods matures (such as ergonomics, robotics, and automation).
  4. Interface with many other teams within Caterpillar for successful completion of projects, such as the E+ES Product Group, Engineering Design Control and Validation teams, Supplier Development Engineers, E&T Purchasing, Operations, consuming Caterpillar facilities’ Manufacturing Engineering/Tech Services, and many other departments.
  5. Ensure that all test bed, early-learner, and prototype build issues and improvements are well documented, and that all best practices and lessons learned are pulled into the production build processes.

Skills

Required

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering/Technology curriculum.
  • 5+ years of related manufacturing and assembly project leadership experience.
  • Cross functional manufacturing expertise, ie: automation, manufacturing (welding, joining, machining, additive, etc), assembly, facilities, and/or project management methodology/processes/tools.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction and Change Management for new technology systems and products.
  • Proven experience in developing facility and workstream layouts, tooling, fixtures, work holding, gaging, EOL test processes, PFMEAs, control plans, risk assessments, and delivering PQVC metrics/scorecards.
  • Proven experience with capital expenditures and managing capital projects, including automation, continuous flow and stall build workstation, In-Process Validations (IPVs), and End of Line (EOL) test.
