Materials Engineer

Joby Aviation Joby Aviation · Robotics · Marina, CA · Airframe & Actuators

Joby Aviation is seeking a Materials Engineer for their Additive Manufacturing team. The role involves owning the full material lifecycle for AM metallic components, from feedstock qualification to post-processing and failure analysis, supporting eVTOL development, certification, and production. Requires a strong understanding of microstructure-processing-properties relationships in aerospace alloys and hands-on lab work.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own incoming qualification and lot acceptance of metallic feedstocks (PSD, morphology, chemistry, flowability, density)
  2. Define and qualify AM surface finishing: tumbling, vibratory finishing, electropolishing, chemical etching, shot peening, and precision machining
  3. Investigate coupon- and component-level failures; perform fracture analysis and drive corrective actions
  4. Author material and process specifications covering feedstock, build parameters, post-processing, and acceptance criteria
  5. Support materials allowables and design-allowable data packages for FAA certification

Skills
