Materials Process Engineer Level 3 or 4

Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman · Aerospace · Sunnyvale, CA +1 · Material/Process

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Materials Process Engineer (Level 3 or 4) with expertise in metallographic sample preparation and analysis of ferrous alloys, including microscopy, SEM-EDS, and various testing methods. The role involves developing material properties, processing methods, and fabrication procedures, as well as conducting failure analyses and reviewing subcontractor procedures. Experience with non-metallic processes and DoD lifecycle management is a plus. The position requires a STEM degree, laboratory experience, and the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.

What you'd actually do

  1. Perform metallographic sample preparation, wet‑chemistry etching, and analysis of ferrous alloys using optical microscopy, SEM‑EDS, hardness testing, XRF, carbon/sulfur analysis, borescopes, and load frames.
  2. Conduct non‑metallic laboratory tests (FTIR, thermal analysis, rheology, KF titration, paints/coatings) as needed.
  3. Develop, analyze, and specify material properties, processing methods, fabrication procedures, and design allowables for metallic, non‑metallic, and composite materials.
  4. Execute failure analyses, life‑prediction studies, and define material requirement specifications.
  5. Review/approve subcontractor material‑processing procedures and ensure compliance with commercial testing standards, material specs, weld codes (NavSea preferred), and DoD lifecycle‑management processes.
