Join Apple's Wireless Technologies and Ecosystems (WTE) team and help deliver the most power-efficient cellular devices in the world. As a Modem Software Power Engineer, you will be at the forefront of defining and optimizing the power performance of Apple's next-generation cellular modems. You will focus on power modeling, deep system analysis, and lab automation, ensuring our devices deliver incredible battery life while maintaining exceptional 5G and LTE performance. If you are passionate about power efficiency and cellular technologies, we would love to hear from you!
Description
In this role, you will be a key contributor to the Wireless Technologies and Ecosystems team. Your primary focus will be on system-level power modeling and analysis for our cutting-edge cellular modems. You will develop detailed power models to predict, analyze, and track power consumption across various cellular scenarios and network conditions. You will design and implement automated test frameworks to measure and validate power KPIs on both pre-silicon platforms and commercial form factor devices. Working closely with system architects, hardware engineers, and firmware developers, you will identify power bottlenecks, propose architectural optimizations, and directly develop and tune SW power features for maximum power savings.
Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore and integrate AI and machine learning methodologies to enhance predictive power models, automate the detection of power regressions in large datasets, and intelligently optimize power/performance trade-offs. By leveraging your expertise in cellular protocols, scripting for automation, and power measurement, you will drive power reduction initiatives from early architecture phases through final product launch.
Responsibilities
Analyze and optimize cellular communication protocols (5G NR, LTE, IMS) to minimize their impact on system power consumption. Design and execute power measurement methodologies using lab equipment, including Keysight and CMW, to evaluate and validate system power behavior. Apply SoC power management techniques — including clock gating, power domain configuration, and low-power sleep state tuning — to improve overall system efficiency. Conduct power vs. performance trade-off studies to drive optimizations that improve system efficiency and extend battery life. Leverage Machine Learning (ML) and AI techniques for predictive power modeling, anomaly detection, and dynamic power optimization. Perform data analysis and develop visualizations that translate complex power measurements into clear, actionable engineering insights. Develop and maintain scripts to automate lab measurements and data collection workflows, improving efficiency and repeatability across the team. Partner cross-functionally with hardware, architecture, and software teams to align on power goals, share findings, and drive collaborative solutions.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors and/or Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field. 3 - 5+ years of industry experience in power modeling, power analysis, or systems engineering. Direct experience optimizing power for baseband processors or RF transceivers. Deep understanding of cellular 3GPP standards relating to 5G NR and LTE, with demonstrated experience with higher-layer protocols such as TCP/IP.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent problem-solving skills with a track record of delivering results in fast-paced environments. Thrive in a collaborative environment, communicate clearly while confidently driving multiple projects across various teams. Adapt to new technologies, think outside the box, and propose technology and product improvements in a data-driven manner. Obsessively passionate, inquisitive, and seek to solve everyday problems in innovative ways.
