This part-time student role focuses on improving the accuracy, reliability, and usability of machine and asset data within a factory setting. Responsibilities include validating machine status, maintaining issue logs, troubleshooting data and connectivity problems, and assisting with PLC tag validation. The role requires strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and experience with Excel, with a preference for exposure to PLCs, industrial controls, or manufacturing systems.

What you'd actually do

  1. Validate machine Run / Idle / Fault status accuracy to ensure alignment with actual equipment behavior and confirm historical data consistency and reliability.
  2. Maintain an issue tracking log (Excel) documenting connectivity, data quality, and status issues by asset type, including trends and recurring problems.
  3. Investigate and troubleshoot data and connectivity issues, including bad tag quality, missing data, misclassified states, and network gaps; clearly document root causes and recommended fixes.
  4. Support resolution of PLC, network, and NALB-related connectivity issues by working with skilled trades and engineering teams.
  5. Assist with PLC tag and UDT validation to ensure accurate data structure and mapping into Ignition and Power BI systems.

Skills

Required

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Experience using Excel for data tracking and organization
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly and work effectively across teams
  • Interest in manufacturing systems, industrial automation, or data analytics
  • Must be registered as a full-time student at an (a U.S./local) accredited college/university
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 (3.0 for Accounting/Finance) or above
  • Available to work during the academic year (16–20 hours/week within business hours of 6 AM to 4 PM)
  • Available to work during the summer semester (35–40 hours/week within business hours of 6 AM to 4 PM)
  • Must be able to commute to the work location in Dubuque, Iowa on a daily basis year-round

Nice to have

  • Exposure to PLCs, industrial controls, or manufacturing systems
  • Familiarity with data visualization or analytics tools such as Power BI or Ignition
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing principles or continuous improvement practices
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment
