Php Tech Lead

Zendesk Zendesk · Enterprise · Krakow, Poland

Zendesk is seeking a PHP Tech Lead (Staff Software Engineer) to join their Workforce Management product team. This role involves designing, building, and operating scalable PHP services that power customer-facing features and internal platforms. The lead will set technical direction, raise engineering standards, and deliver systems for secure and efficient scaling. Responsibilities include leading architecture, driving the full SDLC, defining engineering standards, building high-throughput APIs, mentoring engineers, and partnering with other teams. The role requires 8+ years of experience with PHP backend systems, modern PHP frameworks (Laravel preferred), REST APIs, distributed systems, and cloud environments.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead architecture, design, and delivery of PHP backend services (Laravel or similar), owning technical trade-offs and long‑term maintainability.
  2. Drive the full SDLC for cross-team initiatives: discovery, prototyping, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  3. Define and enforce engineering standards (testing, code review, CI/CD, observability) and champion best practices across teams.
  4. Build and operate high‑throughput, low‑latency APIs and background systems with strong performance, resiliency, and instrumentation.
  5. Mentor and coach engineers across levels, run design reviews, and help grow team capabilities through documentation and knowledge sharing.
