This role focuses on shaping Google's policy and regulatory strategy related to copyright, intellectual property, and media, with a specific emphasis on Artificial Intelligence. The Policy Manager will advocate for Google's positions, analyze legislative proposals, and engage with policymakers and external stakeholders. The role requires experience in technology or content policy, particularly in copyright and media, and involves developing and executing global policy strategies.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead US strategy on the defense of fair use (federal and state), including influencing government action (e.g., U.S. copyright office reports) and promoting good copyright policies overseas.
  2. Serve as the Americas Regional Policy Lead for copyright and AI, media, and news, driving proactive advocacy and education strategies to shape emerging legislation across LATAM and Canada.
  3. Architect and implement the global policy on piracy and site-blocking, modernizing frameworks to address the emerging intersections between managing piracy and AI training.
  4. Act as the global policy authority on emerging issues around likeness and voice, ensuring digital replica policies are driven as a centralized, company-wide objective.
  5. Support outreach and engage directly with policymakers, regulators, industry players and key opinion formers in thoughtful dialogue on copyright, digital replicas, and media policy issues.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience working on technology or content policy issues within industry, government, think tanks, public interest groups, or industry associations on issues related to copyright, intellectual property, and media/publisher policy issues.
  • Experience in copyright or media/news policy issues across the Americas.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with international teams and a variety of stakeholders, developing rich relationships internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of US fair use doctrine and its application to emerging technologies, including AI and digital replicas.
  • Track record of managing global policy issues, particularly concerning international anti-piracy efforts and cross-border IP enforcement.
  • Ability to help solve problems with multiple approaches to reach an optimal solution.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and areas for improvement and to lead and evaluate issues independently.
