Joby Aviation is seeking a power electronics engineer to design electric aircraft components, specifically motor-control inverters and DC/DCs. The role involves schematic capture, PCB design, component selection, testing, and root cause analysis, with a focus on reliability, weight, and efficiency. Experience with high-power inverters and motor control is required.

What you'd actually do

  1. Create clear and readable schematics for power electronics boards
  2. Create optimized and reliable layout designs
  3. Component selection for minimum mass and maximum reliability
  4. Write board bring-up test plans, execute them and collect data for new boards
  5. Collaborate with mechanical engineers to optimize placement of high power modules/components and bus bars

Skills

Required

  • B.S. in electrical engineering or related discipline
  • 3-5 years designing and developing power electronics
  • Understanding of motor control theory for surface and interior permanent magnet machines
  • Schematic capture and PCB design
  • Experience with component selection
  • Great communication skills

Nice to have

  • M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline with a focus in power electronics
  • Experience working in aerospace or automotive industries
  • Experience working in aerospace with a strong background in DO-160 compliance
  • Experience writing embedded software in C for control of inverters and/or other power electronics
  • Familiarity with Altium Designer
  • Wide bandgap semiconductors
  • Exposure to regulatory certification
  • Design-for-reliability, including use of DFMEA and fault trees
  • Designing for high EMI environments
  • Battery systems

What the JD emphasized

  • inverters for driving 50kW to 200kW motors
  • Completed (designed/built/tested) high voltage/high power designs
