Principal Applied Scientist

Microsoft Microsoft · Big Tech · Mountain View, CA +4 · Applied Sciences

Principal Applied Scientist role focused on building and shipping AI agentic applications and predictive models for Viva Engage. The role involves end-to-end delivery of ML capabilities, including problem framing, data handling, modeling, evaluation, experimentation, deployment, and monitoring. Emphasis is on production-viable solutions, leveraging LLMs and generative AI for knowledge discovery, moderation, recommendations, and enhancing user experiences. The position requires hands-on coding in production environments and driving measurable product impact.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design, build, and ship machine learning and LLM-driven capabilities that directly power AI features in Viva Engage, with clear product KPIs (e.g., activation, retention, engagement, moderation quality, time saved).
  2. Own end-to-end delivery of applied science solutions: problem framing → data/labels → modeling/prompting → evaluation → experimentation (A/B tests) → deployment → monitoring → iteration.
  3. Develop and operationalize AI agents for knowledge discovery, moderation, communities, and events—focused on measurable user value, automation, and high-quality recommendations.
  4. Work with large, complex datasets to solve ambiguous, non-routine product problems using advanced statistical and ML methods, prioritizing approaches that are production-viable.
  5. Utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) for advanced text analysis and natural language understanding tasks, enabling deeper connections and knowledge sharing across organizations.
