Principal Electrical Engineer, Instrument Development

Microsoft Microsoft · Big Tech · Redmond, WA +1 · Quantum Engineering

Seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and deployment of special-purpose instrumentation for quantum computing hardware characterization, readout, and control. This role involves mixed-signal electronics, low-noise measurement, timing, high-speed data conversion, and system integration in lab and cryogenic environments. Responsibilities include leading instrument development from concept to deployment, architecting precision electronics, defining timing and synchronization, driving validation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The role also involves defining and maintaining shared reference and validation platforms and managing vendor engagement.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead instrument development from concept through prototype and deployment, including requirements, architecture, schematic/layout oversight, bring-up, calibration, and characterization.
  2. Architect and design precision, low-noise, and mixed-signal electronics for measurement and control, including signal integrity, grounding/shielding, and power integrity in demanding lab/cryo-adjacent environments.
  3. Define timing/clocking and synchronization approaches across instruments and subsystems; own key electrical interfaces between instruments, cryo hardware, and control/readout stacks.
  4. Drive robust validation of instruments (test plans, automated measurements, calibration workflows, and acceptance criteria), and use data to improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including quantum research, architecture, experimentalists, cryogenics, firmware/software, and test engineering to translate system needs into measurable electrical specifications and instrument roadmaps.
